Illinois Shatters Tornado Record in 2026 as Texas Sees a Historic Decline

The 2026 tornado season is unfolding very differently from what is typically seen across the United States, with Illinoisemerging as the state with the highest number of reported tornadoes.

While the traditional Tornado Alley has experienced less activity than expected, several Midwestern states have already broken historical tornado records.

Preliminary data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) show that Illinois widened its lead during July after a year marked by repeated outbreaks of severe weather.

Meteorologists attribute this shift to atmospheric conditions that pushed storm systems farther north, altering the pattern seen in previous tornado seasons.

Illinois surpasses its own record with more than 220 tornadoes

Illinois ended July with 221 preliminary tornado reports, far exceeding the state’s previous record, which had already been broken earlier this year. The increase accelerated following numerous severe weather outbreaks in March, April, and June.

As of June 17, Illinois had recorded 164 preliminary tornado reports, but within just a few weeks that total climbed dramatically. The state now leads the nation by a wide margin in reported tornadoes during the 2026 tornado season.

Indiana ranks second with 89 preliminary tornado reports, less than half of Illinois’ total.

Mississippi, Missouri, and Iowa round out the top five states with the highest tornado activity so far this year.

Texas breaks from Tornado Alley’s historical trend

This year’s weather pattern has surprised experts because the states that traditionally experience the most tornadoes are no longer leading the rankings.

Under normal conditions, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas typically record the highest tornado totals by the end of July. However, Texas has logged only 58 preliminary tornado reports, a figure well below what is usually expected by this point in the season.

By comparison, Illinois typically averages around 52 tornadoes by late July—far below this year’s total of 221.

AccuWeather meteorologist Peyton Simmers explained part of the unusual weather pattern.

«This year’s weather pattern has favored Illinois, with storm systems remaining north of Texas and Oklahoma.»

He also noted that persistent drought conditions in the western United States contributed to the development of a large dome of warm air over Texas and Oklahoma.

«Additionally, drought across the western United States has caused a significant amount of warm air to build over Texas and Oklahoma, helping limit the intensity of severe weather across the southern part of the country.»

Several of the strongest tornadoes caused significant damage

During the 2026 tornado season, Illinois has already confirmed five EF3 tornadoes. The strongest tornado in the state traveled nearly 35 miles (57 kilometers) on March 10.

That tornado produced winds of up to 160 mph (257 km/h) and caused damage from Kankakee, Illinois, to Roselawn, Indiana.

Although Illinois leads the nation in the number of tornadoes, the most powerful tornado of the year struck Enid, Oklahoma, on April 23, producing winds of up to 180 mph (290 km/h).

Authorities rated that storm as an EF4 tornado because of the extent of its damage and extreme intensity.

Other states are also seeing unusual tornado activity

Indiana tied its all-time annual tornado record before surpassing it, making it one of the most active states during the 2026 tornado season.

West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin have also posted unusually high tornado totals this year. West Virginia has recorded 10 preliminary tornado reports, while Wisconsin has reported 51 tornadoes, its highest total since 2011, reflecting the northward shift in severe weather activity.

In addition to tornadoes, Illinois also leads the nation in reports of damaging winds, with 793 incidents recorded so far this year.

When it comes to hail, Texas continues to rank first nationwide with 468 hail reports, followed by Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa, showing a different pattern from this year’s tornado activity, according to AccuWeather.
